Cloth Nappies can be very confusing at first, but once you get to grips with a few terms it's quiet simple.
Nappies, Wraps, Liners, Boosters.
Come in different shapes and sizes and can be made from a range of different materials such as cotton, hemp, micro-fibre, fleece and even bamboo.
Nappies come in 4 different types:
1. Pre-fold / Flat Nappy.
A Terry (towelling) Square, requiring simple folding. Once folded, terry is gathered to form the nappy & is then held together with pins or nappi-nippas. Requires a separate waterproof wrap.
Terry is easy to dry, comes in a range of sizes, (now available for newborns)
Very economical
2. Shaped.
Very similar to disposable nappies. They come in all different sizes or can be one sized (birth to potty). They are fastened with nappi-nippas, velcro or poppers.
Snug fitting with elasticated legs.
Require a separate waterproof wrap, & has very good containment.
3. Pocket.
This type of nappy is also shaped and usually consists of an inner layer of fleece and a waterproof outer layer.
The pocket nappy requires an additional added absorbent material booster, which is usually made of hemp, micro-fibre, terry pad, as an insert.
This can be useful, as the nappies can be used for different children & the degree of boosting can vary. Also handy for different times of the day when more absorbency is required.
No wrap is required.
Can be prepared in advance allowing for easy changing.
Fastens with either poppers or velcro.
Generally quick drying.
4. All-in-one.
This nappy consists of an absorbent inner layer and has a waterproof outer layer. No wrap is required.
Ideal for quick changing.
Snug fitting with elasticated legs.
Fastens with velcro or poppers.
Comes in a range of different sizes or as birth to potty.
Slower drying than other nappies.
Generally more expensive, but still cheaper than using disposables
Fastenings:
Nappies also have different fastenings, either velcro or poppers. However they are available with no fastenings at all & therefore are held together by either safety pins or nappi-nippas.
